My Suggestions
I was just talking to a friend while looking at the horrific pictures from the aftermath of the Japanese 8.9 earthquake. We were talking about a news article about Anheuser-Busch canning water for disaster relief. It got me to thinking. We Americans spend so much on high tech solutions that maybe we overlook the more practical, low impact, low price solutions. I know we all want to make Anheuser-Busch and Halliburton richer, but maybe we should give the small guy, low impact solution a chance.
Clean Water
Clean water for multiple people can be had for $35-$45 dollars in materials and a little bit of labor. No power is needed to run the purification system and it can be set up virtually any where (see the video below).

Cooking & Heating Stove
StoveTec's mission is to deliver clean and efficient cook stoves to the 3 billion people that currently cook over an open fire. 1.6 million people, 85% of which are women and children, die every year from inhaling the smoke emitted by open fires or unimproved cook stoves. You can make a difference! We are a growing organization that is proud to have shipped over 70,000 stoves internationally over the past two years. But there are still billions of people in need! Your Purchase helps to replace dirty and polluting unimproved stoves and open fires with a StoveTec Stove that saves 40 to 50 percent of wood fuel and reduces 55 to 70 percent of dangerous emissions.
Each gift results in a free stove given to a family in the one of our project countries in the developing world.
The commercial version of the stove comes in two forms wood burning only and wood/charcoal. Watch the videos below and I think you will be impressed by the people, their vision and the stove.
