Trump Booed At Davos For Criticizing 'Fake' Media Trump told world political and business leaders at the annual gathering in Switzerland that as a businessman, he received positive media coverage, but once he launched his presidential campaign in 2015, he realized that reporters were "nasty" and "fake," eliciting boos from people in the audience. "It wasn't until I became a politician that I realized how nasty, how mean, how vicious and how fake the press can be ? as the cameras start going off in the back," Trump said. The president frequently makes the false claim that television cameras don't air his anti-media remarks. ... Read more With the Mueller bombshell, the GOP's grand conspiracy theory falls apart This week we finally saw the right's defenses of Donald Trump crystallize into an overarching "theory of everything,"as Salon's Matthew Sheffield wrote on Thursday: A Department of Justice and FBI cabal worked feverishly to help Hillary Clinton escape accountability for her crimes, and was only thwarted by the stable genius of Donald Trump. This "secret society" is now doing everything in its power to overthrow the president. We spent the week following three specific strands of this alleged scandal, all of which have disintegrated by Friday morning. First we had the so-called secret society which was excitedly flogged by the entire Fox News apparatus and taken up, perhaps a bit gingerly, by Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis. That turned out to be a joke in a text message from one of the FBI lovers at the center of the Republican conspiracy theory. Literally. So that was that. ...
Read more **How Trump is destroying the GOP America has never had a president as deeply unpopular at this stage of his presidency, or one who has sucked up more political oxygen. This isn't good news for the Republican Party this November or in the future, because the GOP has sold its soul to Trump. Three principles once gave the GOP its identity and mission: Shrink the deficit, defend states' rights, and be tough on Russia. Now, after a year with the raving man-child who now occupies the White House, the Republican Party has taken a giant U-turn. Budget deficits are dandy, state's rights are obsolete, and Russian aggression is no big deal. By embracing a man whose only principles are winning and getting even, the Republican Party no longer stands for anything other than Trump. ... Read more Click to zoom in |

So many things need light shed on them this week. Luckily we're in The Sunshine State to ask all our burning questions. We'll round up the week's news from sunny Orlando, Florida.

NSA Deletes "Honesty" and "Openness" from Core Values THE NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY maintains a page on its website that outlines its mission statement. But earlier this month, the agency made a discreet change: It removed "honesty" as its top priority. Since at least May 2016, the surveillance agency had featured honesty as the first of four "core values" listed on NSA.gov, alongside "respect for the law," "integrity," and "transparency." The agency vowed on the site to "be truthful with each other." On January 12, however, the NSA removed the mission statement page -- which can still be viewed through the Internet Archive -- and replaced it with a new version. Now, the parts about honesty and the pledge to be truthful have been deleted. The agency's new top value is "commitment to service," which it says means "excellence in the pursuit of our critical mission." ...

Olympic Molester Sentenced | TYT | 01/24/18 | 9:46 The1a.org An Abuse Scandal At USA Gymnastics | 1a.org | 01/25/18 | 1hr
USA Gymnastics has a lot to answer for -- not least why one of their own, Dr. Larry Nassar, was able to molest so many young women.
From Vox: Many of the victims were minors, sometimes abused with their parents in the room while they were medically examined. There is evidence that Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, the two elite institutions associated with Nassar, were slow to act on reports that he was abusing girls and young women.
More than 150 women gave statements against Nassar. He was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison Wednesday. The president of Michigan State University, where Nassar had worked, resigned a few hours after the sentence was announced.

Graham-Durbin immigration proposal 'completely dishonest,' White House says Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) "were completely dishonest" in their negotiations on immigration with President Donald Trump, White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said Monday. Gidley criticized a bipartisan deal on immigration brought forth by the lawmakers, along with four other senators, for failing to live up to their assurances to the White House. "Senator Graham and Senator Durbin called the president and told him they had a bipartisan bill," Gidley said on CNN's "The Lead With Jake Tapper." What You Need To Know To Run For Office | 1a.org | 01/22/18 | 1hr
Some parts of a car can work even without gas. But at what point do we admit our vehicle is broken down? In an op-ed in The Washington Post, British broadcaster Mehdi Hasan writes:
"Is this really what we define as democracy? Or is this, to quote the president-elect, a "rigged" system? Rigged not against Trump and the Republicans but against the poor, against ethnic minorities, against Democrats but, above all else, against basic democratic norms and principles and pretty simple notions of equality and fairness?
This isn't a time for denial or deflection. The American political system is broken. Far from being the "world's greatest democracy," to quote President Obama, representative democracy in the United States seems further hollowed out with every election cycle."
Have you ever looked at a politician and thought, "I could do a better job than that."? You're not alone. Many Americans with a range of political experience are deciding that 2018 is their year to either run for the first time or to move up to a higher office.
Across the country, newcomers are running for school boards, city councils and other posts. A record number of women are running for governor. And thousands of scientists are hoping to get into politics.
As of this week, the Center for American Women and Politics had identified 390 women who have filed or are likely to file as U.S. House candidates and 49 women likely to run for the U.S. Senate. Among House candidates, the vast majority -- 82 percent -- are not incumbents. If those numbers hold up, it would constitute the largest pool of female congressional candidates in history. All of them seem to be heeding President Obama's parting words to the nation. "If you're disappointed by your elected officials, grab a clipboard, get some signatures, and run for office yourself," he said. And there are resources available for those who are interested in running for office. Websites like Ballotpedia track races and the resources needed to be competitive. And the group New American Leaders offers trainings.

The Jobs Trump Promised to Save Are Disappearing ... Last week a round of layoffs at the Carrier factory in Indianapolis, Indiana took effect, in which about 215 people lost their jobs. These layoffs are in addition to the 340 jobs cut in July 2017. The factory's 700 remaining production employees are expected to be outsourced to Mexico by the end of 2018. United Technologies, the company that owns Carrier, received over $2 billion in government contracts in 2017 while offshoring jobs to other countries. "The pace of offshoring is three times greater by federal contractors under Donald Trump," said Joseph Geevarghese, Executive Director of Good Jobs Nation, a labor coalition for low wage federal contract workers, in an interview with the Real News Network. "He campaigned to stop offshoring, yet one year in the office, he's failed to use the power that he has to deliver on that promise." Trump and Republican leaders claim that the recently passed tax bill, which includes reducing corporate taxes from 35 percent to 21 percent, will lead to higher wages and more jobs, but these promises of trickle down economics have failed to deliver. It's Even Worse Than You Think: What the Trump Administration Is Doing to America (12/16/18) by David Cay Johnston
Sen. Jeff Flake condemns President Trump's attacks on mediaBestselling author and longtime Trump observer David Cay Johnston shines a light on the political termites who have infested our government under the Trump Administration, destroying it from within and compromising our jobs, safety, finances, and more. No journalist knows Donald Trump better than David Cay Johnston, who has been following him since 1988. It's Even Worse Than You Think: What the Trump Administration Is Doing to America goes inside the administration to show how the federal agencies that touch the lives of all Americans are being undermined. Here is just some of what you will learn: The Wall. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto told President Trump that Mexico will never pay for the border wall. So, Trump is proposing putting a tariff on Mexican imports. But a tariff will simply raise the price of Mexican goods in the US, meaning American consumers will end up paying for the wall--if it ever gets built. Climate Change. Welcome to the new EPA, run by Scott Pruitt, a lawyer who has spent much of his career trying to destroy the agency he now heads. Secrecy reigns at the new EPA because Pruitt meets with industry executives to find out which clean air and clean water provisions they most want to roll back, and keeps staffers in the dark to make sure these pro-pollution plans don't leak prematurely. Stocking the Swamp. Contrary to his promise to "drain the swamp" in Washington, DC, Trump has filled his cabinet with millionaires and billionaires, from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, a Goldman Sachs and hedge fund veteran who made much of his fortune foreclosing on homeowners to billionaire heiress Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who has already put the interests of bankers ahead of debt-burdened students and their families. The Kleptocracy. Under Donald Trump conflict of interest is passé. When Trump isn't in Washington, he stays at one of his properties, where the taxpayers pick up the tab for staffers, Secret Service, and so on, all at full price. And back in Washington, everyone now knows that the Trump International Hotel is the only place to stay if you want to do business with the administration. Meanwhile sons Donald Jr. and Eric run an eyes-wide-open blind trust of Trump holdings to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest -- but not the reality. Sen. Jeff Flake condemns President Trump's attacks on media | C-Span | 01/17/18 | 14:27 How Trump's TV habits raised the risk of a shutdown White House aides say the president woke up spoiling for a fight and focused his attention on the spending deal after it came up on his favorite cable news show. If the government shuts down on Friday, President Donald Trump's television habits may be partly to blame, according to two White House aides. The president began the day on Thursday by blasting out a tweet that threatened to derail a GOP legislative package designed to keep the government open, arguing that the Children's Health Insurance Program, known by its acronym, CHIP, "should be part of a long-term solution, not a 30-day, or short-term, extension." But that is precisely the package House Speaker Paul Ryan was trying to persuade skeptical Republicans to agree to in order to keep the government open. The Ryan deal had been discussed at length on "Fox & Friends," the president's favorite morning television program, in the hour before he sent the missive -- and the aides immediately suspected that something on the program had prompted it. They also pointed to Trump's frustration over the comments made by his chief of staff, John Kelly, in a Fox News interview Wednesday evening, to explain his seemingly random eruption. ... From dubbing media outlets "fake news" to sharing memes of network logos being physically harmed, President Donald Trump's attacks on the press have been ... aggressive.
None of his efforts have been successful at quieting journalists in the U.S., who are protected from the president by the First Amendment, but denouncing news outlets has influenced some repressive regimes around the world to follow suit, jailing and threatening journalists. As the president continues to question the integrity of the press, how much damage is that causing here and abroad? And, how much does President Trump's attitude toward journalists reflect a growing lack of trust many Americans have in the press overall?

Pentagon Reportedly Weighing Using Nukes In Response To 'Large Cyberattacks' A draft of the Defense Department's new nuclear strategy says the U.S. could respond to certain "non-nuclear attacks" with nuclear weapons. The Pentagon is reportedly pushing a new retaliation tactic should the U.S. ever be hit by a devastating cyberattack: America could nuke the culprit. The New York Times reported Tuesday that a pre-decisional draft of the Defense Department's 2018 Nuclear Posture Review, which details U.S. nuclear strategy, includes "large cyberattacks" as an example of a non-nuclear strike on American lives and infrastructure that could be countered with nuclear weapons. "Three current and former senior government officials said large cyberattacks against the United States and its interests would be included in the kinds of foreign aggression that could justify a nuclear response," the Times wrote of the new strategy. The officials stressed, however, that "other, more conventional options for retaliation" could also be used in response to a cyberattack. ...

White House Press Briefing 01/16/18 | WH | 01/16/18 | 1:14:23Lindsey Graham thought he had Trump tamed -- but got played instead oor Lindsey Graham. The "maverick" senator from South Carolina had spent the last two years expressing his scorn for Donald Trump, calling him "unfit" and "a kook." Then, sometime in the late summer, Graham apparently reconciled himself to the fact that Trump wasn't capable of growing or "pivoting" into the job, so he took it upon himself to cultivate the mercurial manchild, perhaps in the vainglorious belief he could influence Trump to become a mainstream conservative and stamp out the rapidly burning fuse that was going to blow up the presidency and likely the entire Republican Party. Graham played golf with his president, he complimented him on his swing, he flattered his intelligence and he even agreed to throw some red meat at the base on Trump's behalf by taking up the ridiculous crusade to jail Hillary Clinton. He cajoled and he petted and he whispered the sweet nothings that the president needs to hear to make him feel powerful. Graham thought Trump trusted him and looked to him for guidance. He thought he could speak for the president in negotiations. ... Read more |

The1a.orgNew Thinking On Nuclear Weapons | 1a.org | 01/17/18 | 1hr
A draft of the Trump administration's nuclear weapons plan obtained by HuffPost calls for the development of two new types of nuclear weapons.
While the plans haven't yet been approved, the Wall Street Journal reports that they "have strong support in the Pentagon and are expected to go forward, according to people familiar with the review."
"A major question at the heart of the Pentagon review is how to respond to military strategy and programs in Russia and China, which American officials say provide a more prominent role for nuclear weapons. In effect, the Pentagon argues that since adversaries have failed to follow the U.S. in de-emphasizing the role of nuclear weapons, Washington needs a greater range of nuclear options to counter its potential foes, especially for carrying out limited strikes.
While the United States has continued to reduce the number and salience of nuclear weapons, others, including Russia and China, have moved in the opposite direction," said a draft of the plan. "The United States must be capable of developing and deploying new capabilities, if necessary, to deter, assure, achieve U.S. objectives if deterrence fails, and hedge against uncertainty." At the same time, officials from 20 countries are meeting in Canada to discuss diplomatic strategy with North Korea. The country has been testing missiles that would be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, and President Donald Trump has threatened the use of the United States' nuclear arsenal in response. After a peak in the late 1980s, the number of nuclear weapons in the world was shrinking, even though more countries had them. Former President Barack Obama called for a "world without nuclear weapons," near the end of his administration. What will the Pentagon's new plans mean for global disarmament, and for international politics?

Military Quietly Prepares for a Last Resort: War With North Korea Across the military, officers and troops are quietly preparing for a war they hope will not come. At Fort Bragg in North Carolina last month, a mix of 48 Apache gunships and Chinook cargo helicopters took off in an exercise that practiced moving troops and equipment under live artillery fire to assault targets. Two days later, in the skies above Nevada, 119 soldiers from the Army's 82nd Airborne Division parachuted out of C-17 military cargo planes under cover of darkness in an exercise that simulated a foreign invasion. Next month, at Army posts across the United States, more than 1,000 reserve soldiers will practice how to set up so-called mobilization centers that move military forces overseas in a hurry. And beginning next month with the Winter Olympics in the South Korean town of Pyeongchang, the Pentagon plans to send more Special Operations troops to the Korean Peninsula, an initial step toward what some officials said ultimately could be the formation of a Korea-based task force similar to the types that are fighting in Iraq and Syria. Others said the plan was strictly related to counterterrorism efforts. ... Read more

Hawaii missile snafu: That was no 'wrong button.' Take a look. Pushing the "wrong button" was the explanation provided in an official timeline for that false warning that scared the devil out of people in Hawaii on Saturday morning alerting them to an incoming ballistic missile that never was. "The wrong button was pushed," declared Vern Miyagi, head of the state's emergency management agency. But as The Washington Post's Amy Wang reported, the errant employee actually was working with a drop-down menu on a computer program, from which the official chose the wrong item. On Monday, state officials released an image of that menu, provided to The Post by Hawaii News Now, and it shed some light on why it might be confusing. ... Read more

What went wrong? That was the top question after a frightening emergency alert hit people's phones in Hawaii last weekend. The message warned of an imminent missile attack on the island and told recipients to seek shelter. "This is not a drill," the warning ended.
Turns out, it wasn't a drill. It was a mistake. From The New York Times: "Officials said the alert was the result of human error and not the work of hackers or a foreign government. The mistake occurred during a shift-change drill that takes place three times a day at the emergency command post, according to Richard Rapoza, a spokesman for the agency. "Someone clicked the wrong thing on the computer," he said. Now the top question is: Could it happen again? And if push notifications are capable of causing such panic, should we be receiving emergency alerts alongside calendar reminders and sports scores?

Nov. 7, 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the seizure of power by workers and peasants in the Russian Revolution, regarded as the most world-altering event in the history of civilization. Abby Martin talks to Brian Becker, socialist organizer and co-author of the book "Storming the Gates: How the Russian Revolution Changed the World."
Storming the Gates: How the Russian Revolution Changed the World (2017) by Brian Becker
Meet the rural Americans who voted for TrumpThe Russian Revolution 'shook the world' in 1917. It was the first time a socialist revolution had taken hold, putting the workers in power, seizing private property and society's productive capacity. This was the basis for a rational, cooperative society. That revolution became the nemesis of the United States and other imperialist countries, which would not rest until its gains were undone. The Bolshevik Revolution inspired anti-colonial revolutions and national liberation movements around the world, lending solidarity and material assistance to them. As it emerged to be the second-largest economy in the world, the first to put a satellite and human into space, it became a valid counterweight to claims of capitalism's superiority. Storming the Gates looks inside the revolution, from the early years to the last -- not as a neutral observer, but a partisan for revolutionary change. Recounting the vast accomplishments, global impact, loyal followers, challenges and shortcomings, this book remembers 'the Soviet Union not as the end of communism but as its first grand, real-life experiment.' Looking to the future, Storming the Gates examines what role a Bolshevik-type party can have in the 21st Century, and how it can once again shape history. "The single biggest event that shaped global politics in the 20th century was the Russian Revolution of 1917, which gave birth to the Soviet Union. The first socialist government's existence was the pivot for world events in history's most turbulent and dynamic century. The destruction of the Soviet Union 74 years later in 1991 has been the dominant factor shaping global politics ever since." Meet the rural Americans who fear they're being forgotten | WashingtonPost | 07/22/17 | 11:07 Here's What The FBI Lovers' Secret Texts Actually Say About Trump, Clinton And Leaks Last week, a story by The Hill's John Solomon set off another firestorm in the conservative media about the ongoing special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The article, which was linked to by The Drudge Report and aggregated by sites across the right-wing internet before being prominently featured on Sean Hannity's Fox show, fit nicely into a theory about the FBI that some members of Congress and President Donald Trump have been pushing to undermine Robert Mueller's Russia probe. Stay with us, because this gets a bit bizarre. The theory Trump and others have been pushing insinuates that Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, two current FBI employees who were having an affair, were at the heart of an FBI conspiracy against Trump during the 2016 election campaign. Adherents of this theory believe that the couple's 2016 texts criticizing Trump ? which were recovered from their government cellphones, provided to Congress and shared with some reporters ? prove they were out to get the then-candidate. ... Trump Administration Paves Way For States To Force Medicaid Recipients To Work The Trump administration said on Thursday it would allow states to test requiring some Medicaid recipients to work or participate in community activities such as volunteering or jobs training as a condition of eligibility for the government health insurance program for the poor. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued guidance making it easier for states to design and propose test programs that implement such requirements. States must propose such changes through waivers and receive federal approval. Seema Verma, the agency's administrator, said the policy guidance came in response to requests from at least 10 states that have proposed requiring some Medicaid recipients to work or participate in activities that may include skills training, education, job search, volunteering or caregiving. In recent years, the C.D.C. estimates, flu has killed about 12,000 Americans in mild years and 56,000 in moderately severe ones.
A new Trump administration policy will allow states to screen for "able-bodied" adults who are recipients of Medicaid and impose work requirements on them. It's a response to what several states have requested, says the White House.
More than 40 million Americans are covered by Medicaid, although most of the funding goes to children, the elderly and those with disabilities. They won't be affected by the policy changes, but what about those who will? "The guidelines would allow states to require that some Medicaid enrollees hold a job, participate in volunteer work, or enroll in classes or work training for a certain number of hours each week. States could choose to include caregiving for a disabled child or elderly adult as meeting the requirement."

Now, the federal government is saying it can't even guarantee continued coverage for 9 million low-income kids for the full month of January. Before Congress passed legislation last month to inject close to $3 billion into CHIP, several states were on the verge of shutting down the program for lack of funds. A few even began notifying parents that their kids were about to lose health insurance. That could all be about to happen again. ... Read more

"It's tragic and unfortunate that Steve would make these grotesque comments so out of touch with reality and obviously so vindictive," Miller said. "The whole White House staff is disappointed with his comments, which were so grotesque." (There was a lot of "grotesque" and "tragic" in the interview.) Alcohol is a unique legalized drug in American culture. It's not a crime to consume in all states (unlike marijuana). There is little stigma attached to having a drink (unlike cigarettes). And it can be abused somewhat openly, even in the company of your co-workers (unlike opioids).
Americans are drinking more than we used to. Much more. The biggest increases are among women, minorities and elderly people. An estimated 32 million adults in the U.S. binge drink weekly, according to the National Institutes of Health. The Centers for Disease Control say drinking at dangerous levels is responsible for as many as 88,000 deaths every year.

Michael Wolff's Bombshell Book On Trump White House | The View | 01/04/18 | 8:19
Bannon finds his regrets aren't good enough for Trump Steve Bannon, like his onetime brother-in-arms President Donald Trump, is known as someone whose instinct is to double down, not kiss up. That made his belated attempt on Sunday to de-escalate mounting tension with the commander in chief -- who had been publicly and privately raging about his former chief strategist all week -- notable to many of his allies, one of whom called it a "huge step for Steve, one of the most stubborn people on earth." But inside the White House, Bannon's 297-word statement of contrition about comments he made in Michael Wolff's book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" was seen as too little, too late for an operative unaware of the self-inflicted damage his hubris could cause. It did nothing to quell Trump's rage at his former chief strategist or the anger of Bannon's former West Wing colleagues, according to multiple administration officials, who said the vibe in the president's circle was that people were unmoved by the statement. Asked whether there is anything Bannon can do at this point to get back in the president's good graces, one White House official said curtly, "Unlikely." ... Read more Robert Reich: Just How Stupid Is Trump? His cabinet thinks he's an imbecile, but it would be dangerous to underestimate him. For more than a year now, I've been hearing from people in the inner circles of official Washington -- GOP lobbyists, Republican pundits, even a few Republican members of Congress -- that Donald Trump is remarkably stupid. I figured they couldn't be right because really stupid people don't become presidents of the United States. Even George W. Bush was smart enough to hire smart people to run his campaign and then his White House. Several months back when Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called Trump a "f--king moron," I discounted it. I know firsthand how frustrating it can be to serve in a president's cabinet, and I've heard members of other president's cabinets describe their bosses in similar terms. ... Until then, Americans will continue to reel from unfiltered posts like his most recent threats to North Korea and play the absurd game of trying to tell if our lives are immediately under threat or not. The1a.org What Would A Deal On DACA Look Like? | 1a.org | 01/04/18 | 1hr
As lawmakers get back to work in Washington for 2018, one of the top items on their to-do list is to figure out a solution for recipients of the immigration policy called Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, which protects undocumented people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as minors from deportation.
So ... About Socialism | 1a.org | 01/04/18 | 1hr
Last fall, President Trump decided to phase out the program, which affects an estimated 800,000 people, by March, pressing Congress to act on immigration before that time. The president says he's open to talks with Democrats on the issue, but cozy negotiations on immigration across the aisle could alienate Trump's political base. Is there a resolution that could satisfy Republicans and Democrats -- and address the unique needs of DACA recipients and their supporters?
Socialism is on the rise in the United States. And for many in the new generation of voters, that's just fine.
The Washington Post reports that in the last two years, membership in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) nearly tripled, from 8,000 to 25,000. The average age of those members dropped from 64 to 30. And, the Post reports, these young democratic socialists are putting their ideas to practice. Credit for this increasing interest in socialism has gone largely to Senator Bernie Sanders, whose 2016 presidential campaign energized many frustrated young voters. But people under 30 have been warming to socialism for years, according to a 2011 Pew Research Center report. This came at a time when critics of then-President Barack Obama were quick to attach the socialist label to many of his policies -- policies that even mainstream Democrats are defending today.

*Tweet new year: Trump launches barrage of taunts and threats President Donald Trump used his first full work day in 2018 to rekindle one of his favorite political pastimes from 2017: throwing haymakers on Twitter. The president returned to his full combative form Tuesday after arriving in Washington the day prior from a holiday stay in Mar-a-Lago, taunting news outlets with the prospect of awarding them for their "dishonest & corrupt" coverage, threatening on social media to curb U.S. aid to Palestinians, calling for the jailing of former Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, and publicly competing with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over the size of their nuclear buttons. Even as he shifted gears from topic to topic, the day's tweets covered a number of his regular punching bags, both foreign and domestic. The tweets and the ensuing scrutiny over them extended a streak of the president dominating news cycles by his fingertips that lasted for much of 2017 and carried into the latest holiday break. She reported that Donald Trump is still personally involved in running his businesses. The media didn't pay much attention, but perhaps that's not surprising, considering that nobody in a million years actually believed Trump was going to leave his company solely in the hands of his two scions, Donald Jr. and Eric. After all, he's spent a third of his first term making personal promotional appearances at Trump properties. He's not exactly keeping it on the down-low that he's still got his hand in the business. Still, they like to keep up the pretense that Trump isn't paying attention to Trump Organization details because he's so busy running the country. Stanford University Professor Paul R. Ehrlich said the planet was getting too crowded. Lives could be saved by stretching and more evenly distributing food, but it would "only provide a stay of execution," he insisted. Ehrlich's solution was population control. Only that, he wrote, could stop a mass die-off and the inevitable descent of humanity into a new age of "brutality."
What can history teach us about why white supremacy is on the rise today? Author Linda Gordon illuminates the past in her new book, "The Second Coming of the KKK: The Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s and the American Political Tradition." At its peak in the 1920s, Klansmen -- 30,000 of them -- marched on Washington. Some chapters even sponsored baseball teams and beauty pageants.
Gordon writes that, in the heyday of the KKK, it was a part of everyday, ordinary American life, even after federal efforts to outlaw the group. And the Klan was nothing if not organized in the decade leading up to the Great Depression. Today's hate groups are becoming more visible. Are they as unified?

Was 2017 the Craziest Year in U.S. Political History? Imagine how future historians might try to summarize 2017: A U.S. president, his family and his political aides came under investigation by a special counsel for possibly helping a foreign government meddle in the election. Talk of impeachment swirled through Congress, where the fracturing Republican Party was in the midst of an identity crisis--and the Democrats were, too. Twitter became a source of official U.S. policy. A wave of sexual harassment allegations took down U.S. senators and congressmen, top judges and reporters, and high-profile political candidates--but not the president, who had been caught on tape admitting to grabbing women "by the pussy." We learned that the Pentagon has secretly been studying UFOs. All while the leaders of North Korea and the United States exchanged threats to rain down nuclear "fire and fury like the world has never seen." But as unbelievable and unprecedented as this year seemed, how wild was it really? Does it come in No. 1 in the pantheon of American political chaos? Or, alongside the Civil Wars, assassinations, race riots and Watergates, does it not even rank? We asked some of the nation's smartest historians to tell us whether 2017 was indeed the craziest year in U.S. political history, and, if not, what year's got it beat. Here's what they had to say. --Elizabeth F. Ralph ... Read more Trump Boasts He's Signed More Laws Than Any President Since Truman. He's Actually Signed the Fewest. You know if Donald Trump is pushing some sort of record or achievement or a Time cover, you should probably run the numbers again, you know, just to double-check. On Wednesday, while totally not golfing at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump reflected on his first year in office in a way only Trump could. That is, he basically made it up. Ruminating on what he considered his achievements, Trump explained at an event with firefighters in West Palm Beach that he had set a record for the most legislation passed in a year. At least that's what it appears he was trying to say: Donald Trump said: We got a lot of legislation passed ... I believe--and you would have to ask those folks who will know the real answer--we have more legislation passed, including the record ... was Harry Truman, a long time ago. But was the inauguration of President Trump the biggest story of 2017? We look back over the major headlines that shaped the year and ones we're not likely to forget in 2018.
While many of the big stories about President Donald Trump concern domestic politics, America's new leader has had a major impact on the world. Whether it's the investigation into Russian election meddling or the growing tension with North Korea, President Trump's presence is felt globally.
Meanwhile, this year also saw persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, an attempted coup in Turkey and major elections in Britain and France.

Trump visited his properties over 100 times this year West Palm Beach, Florida (CNN)President Donald Trump, fresh off of signing his signature tax legislation, arrived in Florida on Friday for a prolonged visit at Mar-A-Lago, his private club that sits on this tony spit of land in Southern Florida. With him comes a host of White House aides, an abundance of Secret Service agents and the ongoing controversy around the President boosting his private businesses by making frequent visits to properties that bear the Trump name. Trump's Friday arrival to Mar-A-Lago will mark the 106th day Trump has visited one of his properties as President, a fact that critics argue helps the businessman-turned-politician boost the bottom line at The Trump Organization. Trump transferred his business holdings to a trust run by his sons before taking office earlier this year, but stopped short of selling off his holdings. ... Read more

A POLITICO review of the practices of 17 Cabinet heads found that at least seven routinely decline to release information on their planned schedules or travels -- information that was more widely available during the Obama and George W. Bush administrations. Four other departments -- Agriculture, Labor, Homeland Security and Education -- provide the secretaries' schedules only sporadically or with few details. The Treasury Department began releasing weekly schedules for Secretary Steven Mnuchin only in November. In addition, at least seven Cabinet departments don't release appointment calendars that would show, after the fact, who their leaders had met with, what they discussed and where they traveled -- a potential violation of the Freedom of Information Act, which says agencies must make their records "promptly available to any person." Trump taunts Democrats as he touts tax reform win President Donald Trump predicted Thursday that the package of tax cuts passed Wednesday by Congress "will soon be kicking in and will speak for themselves," proving wrong Democrats who he said "hate these big cuts" and the media, who he said "is desperate to write badly" about the White House-backed legislation. "The Massive Tax Cuts, which the Fake News Media is desperate to write badly about so as to please their Democrat bosses, will soon be kicking in and will speak for themselves," Trump wrote on Twitter. "Companies are already making big payments to workers. Dems want to raise taxes, hate these big Cuts!" The bill, which the president is expected to sign, is the first major legislative victory for Trump and the culmination of a career-long goal for House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), long a tax policy wonk who once served as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Wrapped up in the legislation were other GOP priorities, including a repeal of the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate and opening Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Reserve for oil drilling. ... Read more Ryan: 'Nobody Knows' If Massive Tax Cuts Will Pay For Themselves House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) said Wednesday that "nobody knows" if Republicans' tax bill, which would overwhelmingly benefit corporations and the wealthy while adding more than $1.4 trillion to the deficit, would pay for itself. "Are you saying that the growth you're going to get from this tax cut will equal the amount it would cost on the deficit side, so that it's a wash?" Savannah Guthrie asked Ryan in an interview Wednesday. "Nobody knows the answer to that question, because that's in the future," Ryan said. Even though the postcard-size tax return that President Trump promised every American won't be coming anytime soon, Republicans are delivering on three major orthodoxies with a singular bill. In addition to a dramatic slashing of the corporate tax rate, the Republican tax bill does away with the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate and opens the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration. Short of stacking the Supreme Court with eight other justices in the mold of Clarence Thomas, no single act of Congress could succinctly meet such a wide-array of long-term Republican goals. ... Author of "The Despot's Apprentice" on the "long-term corrosion of democracy" that won't end when Trump is gone The presidency of Donald Trump has forced the American people to confront questions most of us had never before considered possible. What happens when a president has no respect for the Constitution and the country's democratic institutions and traditions? When a president and his allies consider themselves above the law, what is to be done? If a president creates his own version of reality by behaving like a political cult leader, what forms of resistance are effective -- or even possible? Is the president of the United States a fascist and demagogue who may be under the influence of the country's enemies? Too many Americans believed their country to be exceptional and unique. This blinded them to the threat to democracy embodied by Donald Trump -- as well as other members of the extreme right-wing -- until it was too late to stop him from stealing control. Moreover, the rise of Trump's authoritarian movement (dishonestly operating under the mask of "populism") has both empowered and revealed the tens of millions of Americans who have authoritarian or fascist leanings. The threat to American democracy is deep; it will take a long time to purge this civic sickness and political disease from the body politic. The story of the Manhattan Project is often told as a modern miracle: Facing difficult odds in World War II, the United States gathers its top minds and produces a weapon that can end the war, but only at the cost of thousands of lives and a permanently changed world order. The scientific success and efficiency is matched only by the conflicted morality behind the achievement. But the Manhattan Project wasn't the first time the U.S. did something like this.
In World War I, the U.S. raced to catch up with Germany in the development of chemical weapons. And much of the development and testing of these weapons was done in the nation's capital.

The Republican Tax Bill Provides Huge Benefits to People Who Don't Work. But Only if They're Rich. After passing their tax bill, Republicans plan to impose work requirements on safety net programs. The Senate tax bill gives business owners nearly three times more benefits than workers with wages and salaries, according to a new analysis from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Adam Looney, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told The New York Times that if the bill becomes law it would be the first time that "wage earners were substantially penalized" by the tax code. The diverging treatment comes from how the tax bill treats the 95 percent of businesses that are structured so that profits are taxed as individual income. Republicans portray these businesses, which are known as "pass-throughs," as "ma and pa bakeries and family-owned salons." In reality, most pass-through income goes to people in the top 1 percent -- including the Trump family. The House tax bill cuts the top income tax rate for pass-throughs from 39.6 percent to 25 percent, which would cost taxpayers nearly $600 billion over 10 years. About 86 percent of small business owners would not benefit because all of their income is already in the 25 percent tax bracket or lower. The Simpsons, Star Wars and Spider-Man could all be owned by the same company, if Disney's purchase of 21st Century Fox is approved. More local TV stations could soon be owned by one controversial company. And internet service providers could start changing how they treat streaming services and sites.
The media industry is changing fast, and the Federal Communication Commission's rollback of regulations has only accelerated the changes. Supporters say it's all in the interest of a better user experience. But consolidation and regulatory reforms raise serious questions over conflicts of interest and the integrity of the internet.

How the loss of net neutrality could change the internet Supporters of the repeal say it will free up internet providers to innovate, while opponents fear the online world will become more like cable TV. The Federal Communications Commission's party-line vote Thursday to dump the Obama-era rules, which required internet service providers to treat all web traffic equally, opens the door for companies like Verizon and AT&T to experiment with new business models free from government regulation. ISPs point to an array of possible pro-consumer outcomes like "family friendly" broadband packages that block content not suitable for children, or guaranteed fast speeds for health-related mobile applications. But net neutrality advocates paint an array of troubling scenarios -- from smaller websites like the crafts marketplace Etsy and streaming service Vimeo forced to pay tolls to reach consumers, to cable giants like Comcast blocking or slowing disfavored sites while giving priority to their own content. ...

It's Even Worse Than You Think: What the Trump Administration Is Doing to America by David Cay Johnston
Bestselling author and longtime Trump observer David Cay Johnston shines a light on the political termites who have infested our government under the Trump Administration, destroying it from within and compromising our jobs, safety, finances, and more. But a tariff will simply raise the price of Mexican goods in the US, meaning American consumers will end up paying for the wall -- if it ever gets built. Trump's Lies vs. Obama's After we published a list of President Trump's lies this summer, we heard a common response from his supporters. They said, in effect: Yes, but if you made a similar list for previous presidents, it would be just as bad. We've set out to make that list. Here, you will find our attempt at a comprehensive catalog of the falsehoods that Barack Obama told while he was president. (We also discuss George W. Bush below, although the lack of real-time fact-checking during his presidency made a comprehensive list impossible.) We applied the same conservative standard to Obama and Trump, counting only demonstrably and substantially false statements. The result: Trump is unlike any other modern president. He seems virtually indifferent to reality, often saying whatever helps him make the case he's trying to make. ...
Read more I talked to people signing up for Obamacare. Here's what I learned For the past few weeks, health care has been a regular interruption in my life as I've interviewed strangers about their health insurance for a series focused on people shopping the state and federal exchanges. I wanted to know how former President Barack Obama's polarizing health care law affects the people it's meant to insure in a year when the law's existence is more precarious than ever. I looked online and in person for people to profile. Most exchange shoppers who were willing to go on the record were in favor of "Obamacare," though some ultimately couldn't find affordable coverage on its exchanges this year. Only one person is totally against the law. These profiles aren't a scientific cross-section of America. They're meant to be an up-close look. But some clear patterns emerge when you look at the law in action. ... Read more |

Democrats cool to Trump's infrastructure pitch Officials likely have their work cut out for them in wooing Democrats after a year of partisan bickering over nominations, health care and taxes. The White House is preparing to unveil its long-awaited $1 trillion infrastructure plan soon after President Donald Trump signs the GOP tax overhaul, hoping to begin 2018 with another big legislative win -- but its approach is already drawing resistance from Democrats who are in no mood to cooperate. The plan set for release in January is expected to call for as much as $200 billion in federal spending over the next decade, with the rest coming from private investment, state or local funding and cuts to other federal programs. An administration official added new details this week, telling POLITICO that a wide variety of projects -- from bridges to broadband -- would have to compete for federal assistance, while showing they're prepared to put their own money on the table. ... Truman's unexpected rise to the position of commander-in-chief has a lot of similarities with Donald Trump's ascension to power. The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President by Bandy X. Lee
Since the start of Donald Trump's presidential run, one question has quietly but urgently permeated the observations of concerned citizens: What is wrong with him? Constrained by the American Psychiatric Association's "Goldwater rule," which inhibits mental health professionals from diagnosing public figures they have not personally examined, many of those qualified to answer this question have shied away from discussing the issue at all. The public has thus been left to wonder whether he is mad, bad, or both. In THE DANGEROUS CASE OF DONALD TRUMP, twenty-seven psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health experts argue that, in Mr. Trump's case, their moral and civic "duty to warn" America supersedes professional neutrality. They then explore Trump's symptoms and potentially relevant diagnoses to find a complex, if also dangerously mad, man. Philip Zimbardo and Rosemary Sword, for instance, explain Trump's impulsivity in terms of "unbridled and extreme present hedonism." Craig Malkin writes on pathological narcissism and politics as a lethal mix. Gail Sheehy, on a lack of trust that exceeds paranoia. Lance Dodes, on sociopathy. Robert Jay Lifton, on the "malignant normality" that can set in everyday life if psychiatrists do not speak up. His madness is catching, too. From the trauma people have experienced under the Trump administration to the cult-like characteristics of his followers, he has created unprecedented mental health consequences across our nation and beyond.

Voters in Alabama are divided. Polls show that it's anybody's race in the state's special election for the Senate. But within the Republican faction of Alabama's electorate, there's a divide over the GOP's candidate, Roy Moore. Alabama is predominantly Christian -- 86 percent. Almost half the people in that demographic identify as Evangelical Protestants. That includes Roy Moore, who has campaigned on his religious values but has left some who align with his ideology conflicted in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct with girls.
Moore faces off against Democrat Doug Jones at the polls in Alabama Tuesday. How will turnout from voters on the religious right affect the outcome of the race? And can the rift among evangelicals heal, no matter the results of the election?

Drawing on revelatory new materials--including newly discovered U.S. government documents, U.S. and European intelligence sources, the personal correspondence and journals of Allen Dulles's wife and mistress, and exclusive interviews with the children of prominent CIA officials--Talbot reveals the underside of one of America's most powerful and influential figures. Dulles's decade as the director of the CIA--which he used to further his public and private agendas--were dark times in American politics. Calling himself "the secretary of state of unfriendly countries," Dulles saw himself as above the elected law, manipulating and subverting American presidents in the pursuit of his personal interests and those of the wealthy elite he counted as his friends and clients--colluding with Nazi-controlled cartels, German war criminals, and Mafiosi in the process. Targeting foreign leaders for assassination and overthrowing nationalist governments not in line with his political aims, Dulles employed those same tactics to further his goals at home, Talbot charges, offering shocking new evidence in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. An exposé of American power that is as disturbing as it is timely, The Devil's Chessboard is a provocative and gripping story of the rise of the national security state--and the battle for America's soul.
*The Brothers: John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, and Their Secret World War by Stephen Kinzer (2014)
Anyone wanting to know why the United States is hated across much of the world need look no farther than this book. "The Brothers" is a riveting chronicle of government-sanctioned murder, casual elimination of "inconvenient" regimes, relentless prioritization of American corporate interests and cynical arrogance on the part of two men who were once among the most powerful in the world. John Foster Dulles and his brother, Allen, were scions of the American establishment. Their grandfather John Watson Foster served as secretary of state, as had their uncle Robert Lansing. Both brothers were lawyers, partners in the immensely powerful firm of Sullivan & Cromwell, whose New York offices were for decades an important link between big business and American policy making. John Foster Dulles served as secretary of state from 1953 to 1959; his brother ran the C.I.A. from 1953 to 1961. But their influence was felt long before these official appointments. In his detailed, well-constructed and highly readable book, Stephen Kinzer, formerly a foreign correspondent for The New York Times and now a columnist for The Guardian, shows how the brothers drove America's interventionist foreign policy. |

Trump White House Weighing Plans For Private Spies To Counter "Deep State" Enemies THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION is considering a set of proposals developed by Blackwater founder Erik Prince and a retired CIA officer -- with assistance from Oliver North, a key figure in the Iran-Contra scandal -- to provide CIA Director Mike Pompeo and the White House with a global, private spy network that would circumvent official U.S. intelligence agencies, according to several current and former U.S. intelligence officials and others familiar with the proposals. The sources say the plans have been pitched to the White House as a means of countering "deep state" enemies in the intelligence community seeking to undermine Donald Trump's presidency. The creation of such a program raises the possibility that the effort would be used to create an intelligence apparatus to justify the Trump administration's political agenda. "Pompeo can't trust the CIA bureaucracy, so we need to create this thing that reports just directly to him," said a former senior U.S. intelligence official with firsthand knowledge of the proposals, in describing White House discussions. "It is a direct-action arm, totally off the books," this person said, meaning the intelligence collected would not be shared with the rest of the CIA or the larger intelligence community. "The whole point is this is supposed to report to the president and Pompeo directly." ...

The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner Hardcover - December 5, 2017 by Daniel Ellsberg
Here, for the first time, former high level defense analyst Daniel Ellsberg reveals his shocking first-hand account of America's nuclear program in the 1960s. From the remotest air bases in the Pacific Command, where he discovered that the authority to initiate use of nuclear weapons was widely delegated, to the secret plans for general nuclear war under Eisenhower, which, if executed, would cause the near-extinction of humanity, Ellsberg shows that the legacy of this most dangerous arms buildup in the history of civilization--and its proposed renewal under the Trump administration--threatens our very survival. No other insider with high level access has written so candidly of the nuclear strategy of the late Eisenhower and early Kennedy years, and nothing has fundamentally changed since that era. Framed as a memoir--a chronicle of madness in which Ellsberg acknowledges participating--this gripping expose reads like a thriller and offers feasible steps we can take to dismantle the existing "doomsday machine" and avoid nuclear catastrophe, returning Ellsberg to his role as whistleblower. The Doomsday Machine is thus a real-life Dr. Strangelove story and an ultimately hopeful--and powerfully important--book about not just our country, but the future of the world.
Destroying Yemen: What Chaos in Arabia Tells Us about the World by Isa Blumi
Visually Makes You ThinkSince March 2015, a Saudi-led international coalition of forces -- supported by Britain and the United States -- has waged devastating war in Yemen. Largely ignored by the world's media, the resulting humanitarian disaster and full-scale famine threatens millions. Destroying Yemen offers the first in-depth historical account of the transnational origins of this war, placing it in the illuminating context of Yemen's relationship with major powers since the Cold War. Bringing new sources and a deep understanding to bear on Yemen's profound, unwitting implication in international affairs, this explosive book ultimately tells an even larger story of today's political economy of global capitalism, development, and the war on terror as disparate actors intersect in Arabia. Democracy Now! U.S. and World News Headlines for Thursday, December 07 [10:09] Daniel Ellsberg Reveals He was a Nuclear War Planner, Warns of Nuclear Winter & Global Starvation | DN | 12/06/17 | 38:51
Could tension between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un bring us to the brink of nuclear war? As tensions ramp up, we discuss what nuclear war would look like with a former nuclear war planner and one of the world's most famous whistleblowers -- Daniel Ellsberg. In 1971, Ellsberg was a high-level defense analyst when he leaked a top-secret report on U.S. involvement in Vietnam to The New York Times and other publications, which came to be known as the Pentagon Papers. He played a key role in ending the Vietnam War. Few know Ellsberg was also a Pentagon and White House consultant who drafted plans for nuclear war. His new book, published Tuesday, is titled "The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner." We speak with Ellsberg about his top-secret nuclear studies, his front row seat to the Cuban missile crisis, whether Trump could start a nuclear war and how contemporary whistleblowers Chelsea Manning and Ed Snowden are his heroes.

Every few weeks, there's a new headline about the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election. This week, it was a big one. As the Washington Post reports: As President Trump delivered his inaugural address on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in January , his new national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, sent a text to a former business associate telling him that a plan to build nuclear power plants in the Middle East in partnership with Russian interests was "good to go," according to a witness who spoke with congressional investigators.
How is Flynn's texting related to Paul Manafort's indictment? How do the congressional committees factor into this? And who is being questioned about what? It's tough to keep it all straight, so we sit down with Shane Harris from the Wall Street Journal to get a refresher -- and an update -- on the investigation.
